On October 20, the Allegheny County Council passed Paid Parental Leave legislation. The policy now goes to County Executive Sara Innamorato for signature.

Just a reminder of what is included in the policy:

  • Leave Period – Up to 12 weeks, taken within the first year of birth or adoption.
  • Employer size – Employers with 15 or more regular full or part-time employees.
  • Employee Eligibility – Employees must work at least six months and 625 hours to qualify.
  • Stillbirths – Employees may take leave for stillbirths.
  • Effective Date – Six months after the bill becomes law with an additional six-month grace period available in certain circumstances.

The effective date will be in 2027. While businesses wait for more guidance from the county, our office is here to help. Contact Jean Novak at jnovak@smgglaw.com if you have questions.
