Adoption, Guardianship, and Family Formation

Adoption, Guardianship, and Family Formation

At Strassburger McKenna Gutnick & Gefsky, we understand there are many ways to create and grow a family. Our family law group represents people who want to become parents through adoption and assisted reproductive technology (A.R.T.), as well as birth parents; donors of eggs, sperm, and embryos; and surrogates. We also handle guardianships of minors and of adults who lack the capacity to make informed decisions on their own behalf.

SMGG Attorneys represent clients in a variety of personal services, including:

  • Adoption
  • Guardianship
  • Assisted Reproduction and Surrogacy
  • Two Moms/Two Dads (second parent adoption)

Our Clients

The Adoption, Guardianship, and Family Formation Group at SMGG represents many types of clients, including:

  • Adoptive parents
  • Birth parents
  • Stepparents
  • Guardians

Adoption

Bringing a child into your family is a huge, life-changing decision. The adoption process is complex and confusing whether you are adopting a baby or older child. Our attorneys have handled hundreds of adoptions including interstate adoptions, international adoptions, domestic adoptions, infant adoptions, special needs adoptions, older child adoptions, same sex couple adoptions, and stepparent adoptions. It is important to have knowledgeable and effective representation throughout the process.

At Strassburger McKenna Gutnick & Gefsky, our attorneys help you move through the adoption process, either through an adoption agency or an independent adoption.

Assisted Reproductive Technology (A.R.T.)

Our attorneys have experience with all the legal aspects of A.R.T., including preparation of donor egg and donor sperm agreements, gestational carrier and surrogacy agreements, and obtaining prebirth orders of court to facilitate having the intended or genetic parents named on the child’s birth certificate. We can walk our clients through the process and assist them in finding resources as well.

Guardianships

Our guardianship group routinely handles guardianships of minors and of adults who lack the capacity to make informed decisions on their own behalf. We handle guardianships in multiple counties in Western Pennsylvania and can assist in assessing whether a guardianship is the appropriate course of action. We also work with medical and developmental experts with expertise in these matters.

The Adoption, Guardianship, and Family Formation team at Strassburger McKenna Gutnick & Gefsky understands the intricacies of family. For more information, please contact the Adoption, Guardianship, and Family Formation Group Chair, Gerri L. Sperling.
